Interesting Facts about Dinosaurs

We all know dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago during a mass extinction event but what few of us realize is that they dominated planet Earth for millions of years before that. There were thousands of different species of dinosaurs during that time many we will never know but we do know many interesting facts about the rest.

Did You Know

  • Not all dinosaurs were giant beasts stalking across the Earth; many species were actually as small as house cats or even pigeons.
  • Paleontologists break dinosaurs into two groups saurischian (lizard-hipped) and ornithischian (bird-hipped) and believe lizard-hipped dinosaurs evolved into birds.
  • It’s now believed that some carnivorous and ornithopod dinosaurs were warm-blooded based on their active life-styles.
  • Not all dinosaurs went extinct when a meteor hit the earth, it took hundreds possibly thousands of years for them to die out.

Activity

Despite popular believe dinosaurs like T-Rex and Stegosaurus didn’t live at the same time. Assign each student a dinosaur to find out when it lived and when it died out. Then as a class create a giant timeline placing each dinosaur at where it first appeared and where it died to see how they overlap.
